I Remember Columbine

I was in kindergarten, but I still knew enough to know that something wasn’t right.  My mom wept watching the tv and I didn’t understand but there was a feeling of solemnity that couldn’t be shaken.

The Columbine High School Massacre, as it’s now known, occurred in 1999.

I’ve read several books on different accounts from those who were there that day.  I new understood what was happening, but I still couldn’t understand why.

I still can’t understand why.

Hundreds of mass shootings have occurred since I was in kindergarten, including the devastation of school children and teens.

Maybe it’s a gun problem – certainly there is the argument for that.

Maybe it’s a people problem… Maybe it starts with families.  I don’t pretend to know the answers.  I don’t even pretend to know the problems.

But I do know pain.  Perhaps not the extent of losing a loved one in an attack, but I do know pain.  And I think that we are all united in that pain, that sorrow.  I think we can all agree that these massacres are senseless and that all we want is peace.

So, whatever you believe, pray for the people hurting, give your thoughts to those who have lost someone, and if that someone is you – know that you are not forgotten.  We remember you and the ones you love.  May God bless you and keep you.
